            There are many ways how both friends can be made and be close. In the stories My Antonia, and Once around Manhattan these things are shown. These two pairs of friends, Gina and Soo-Hyung from Once around Manhattan, and Antonia and Jim from My Antonia are similar in many ways.

            In Once around Manhattan the only two women in the story were doing the canoe trip all the way around Manhattan. At first they felt bad because they were the only girls, but then the coach guy says “You ladies feeling strong?” and that also made them feel bad. (They feel bad whenever they get called ladies). When they were on their way on the river they see Yankee Stadium. The story says that Gina loves the Yankees, but Soo- Hyung hates the Yankees and loves the Mets, which made Gina feel bad. Soo-Hyung was getting mad when they fell behind, because of Gina visiting where her grandmother came when she immigrated here from Italy. They caught up and they didn’t like this trip so far. Then when they were turning around Manhattanthey saw the Statue of Liberty and they decide to name it each others name, and to say something good about each other. That is what made the trip worth while and in the end they wanted to complete it with some fun….

            In My Antonia Jim and Antonia do many things together like picking the vegetables in the early morning for dinner,  and they hung out all the time. Jim and Antonia and Jim were like Siblings because they ate dinner together and they even watched the lightning storms on the roof together. This friendship is greatly shown throughout the story. Antonia's friendship with Jim could be summed up by one word like togetherness, because they do so many things together in the book.

            The two friendships in these two stories are similar because they deal with being together throughout the stories. In the story Once around Manhattan the two girls at first didnt like being together, but they were. In My Antonia The boy and the girl like to be together, but they are still together. 

            In conclusion The friendships in these stories can be summed up by saying that they have diferent lives, but they have the same kind of friend ship. These two stories show making friends and being close .

I read two stories in the Practice Final Exam. The stories were called "My Antonia" and "Once Around Manhatten". In these two stories there are two very similar friendships. In "My Antonia" the friendship is between Jim and Antonia. In "Once Around Manhatten" the friendship is between Gina and Soo-Hyung.

In "Once Around Manhatten" Gina and Soo-Hyung are close friends and are going on a kayak trip with eachother. When they are kayaking with their group, Gina and Soo-Hyung are left behind because they are the only girls and the weakest. So they were left behind and they see a bridge that Gina remembers. Her Grandma's house was near there and she remembered the landmark because she played on it with her grandma. Gina is amazed she saw it. She got off the kayak and walked around leaving Soo-Hyung with the boats. Soo-Hyung didn't care though. Gina came back and was amazed at how much she remembered. She had a great time. They soon caught up with the group and they had so much fun.

In the story "My Antonia", Jim and Antonia are close friends how have a lot of fun together. The story is told by Jim. Jim says: "Antonia and I climbed up on the slanting roof of the chicken-house to watch the clouds." They also had a great moment up on the roof. They had a very special moment indeed. They talked about things, and had a special moment. Jim says: "Why aren't you always nice like this". Antonia says: "How nice?" Jims says: "Why just like this; like yourself." Antonia didn't answer she just said: "If i live here, like you, that is different. Things will be easy for you. But they will will be hard for us." She really wanted to be with him but it would be hard for someone different to live there.

These people and their friendships are similar because they both have a special moment with eachother. Soo-Hyung and Gina have the moment at the bridge and and Antonia and Jim have it watching the clouds during the storm while sitting on top of the chicken-house. They will be best friends for the rest of their lives and they will never forget eachother because of these moments. These moments are important because the moments that they had will change their lives forever. They will definetly do it again.

Concluding I think these friendships are similar because they are both bestest buddies and they both have special moments that they will remember forever, and they will know eachother forever also.

I have just recently read two passages named My Antonia and Once Around Manhattan. In these passages there are two pairs of friendships. There names are Jim and Antonia and Gina and Soo-hyung.  They are very similar. They are similar in the fact they both are friends and have a very strong relationship with one-an-other.

In the story Once Around Manhattan Gina and Soo-hyung are close friends going on a kayaking trip with there group. They have a very special moment when they go to the bridge where Gina remembers playing at her grandma`s house. She stopped and had remembrance of Spaghetti dinners and everything else about her Italian family. While this is going on Soo-hyung remembered about her grandmother who came from Seoul with her grandfather after the Korean War. This moment in the story is one that made me remember how my family is when i see my great grandma. There friendship bond was very strong. They were both remembering about there relatives. They understood how each other felt. They were having such a good time that there were left behind in the kayaking group and they had to catch up and go faster to get back to they group.

In the story My Antonia Jim and Antonia are friends  who have many great times with one-an-other. The story is narrated by Jim and he says "Antonia and I climbed up on the slanting roof of the chicken-house to watch the clouds." They had a very fun time doing this mainly because it was during a electrical storm. There was lightning zigging and zagging. I would imagine this to be a quite amazing sight just because the author, Willa Cather, describes it as a "a beautiful electrical storm" After reading this I would really want to see one in person. If I had this experience with one of my friends I think it would make us closer friends. Jim and Antonia have this experience and they Jim wants Antonia to always act the way she did that night, she acted like her brother.

The two pairs of friends are very similar. They are both friends who have a very important  moment with each other. Soo-hyung and Gina have the moment at the bridge remembering there past while Jim and Antonia have a great time watching a electrical storm on top of the chicken-house. Both of the friends will most likely will have each-other forever as a friendship. They have had no problems with each other that I know off so far so I cant understand why they would be friends.

In conclusion I think theses are both good stories and recommend you reading both. I hope that after reading my Essay you will now know the similarity's of Soo-hyung and Gina from the story Once Around Manhattan Island and Jim and Antonia from My Antonia.

I disagree with this statement that popular people can get away with more than less popular people. I disagree because popular and less popular people are the same (besides of their popularity). They have the same rights and they are both human not different, not from different planets. Its like Tupac Shakur said “it doesn’t matter if you are black or white we are both human”. It doesn’t matter if you are popular or not you are both human.

Popular kids shouldn’t get more rights or shouldn’t get away with more then less popular kids. If a popular kid and a less popular kid get in a fight its not like the popular kid wont get in trouble and the less popular kid will get suspended. That would be unfair to the less popular kid he would get into a lot of trouble and the popular kid won’t. Imagine this, imagine you were the loser and I was the cool kid how would you feel…no so good. Put yourself in his shoes, doesn’t feels so good does it?

In Kira’s world, children are sometimes abused or neglected.  For example, they keep the children in a pen they build with twigs.  It says “We’re going to use the saplings to build a pen for the tykes.”  (Page 15-16).  The pen is dangerous because the twigs can cut the children.  The children are also abused.  The girl who is taken to be the singer says “They be stuffing new things into me.”  (page 154).  She means she wants to sing the songs she wants to sing, and the Guardians are forcing her to sing the songs they want her to sing.

In some regards, Matt may be considered to be both abused and neglected.  Examples of the abuse he experiences include when his brother tells Kira that “Our mum, she thrashed Matt so hard he was horrid bloody.”  (Page 164).  In the beginning of the book, Matt tells Kira he has to do his work:  “I be whipped iffen I don’t finish the fire twiggies.”  (Page 10).  It seems Matt has a rough life and gets hit a lot.

Matt is also neglected.  He is never given a bath.  He also has to steal because he doesn’t get fed.  (Page 77).  No one in his family really cares about him or is nice to him.  Kira had to teach him what a “gift” was.  After she told him, he said, “I ant a gift.  I never be getting one.”  (Page 104).

The fact that Matt is abused influences his personality.  He can be characterized as very faithful to people who are nice to him.  He also is willing to try a lot of things because nothing can be worse than the life he has already at home.  These qualities are important because in the book, he helps Kira to grow as a person and an artist in the following ways.  He helps her be an artist by going off to get her the color blue from a far away place.  He helps her grow as a person because he is faithful to her, and she grows attached to him and wants to make sure he is taken care of.

There are some people in the book “Gathering Blue” that are being abused and neglected and some of them aren’t Matt. One of the people I think are getting neglected and abused is Kira. I think she is being neglected because of her leg. In the book it states that Kira said: “I’ve returned to rebuild my cott.” She told Vandara “Your space is gone. Its mine now, those saplings are mine!” Vandara said.

Also Matt is abused by his mother dearest also known as mum as the book says it. Matt was hungry so he sneaked a tiny bit of food and his mom abused him for that. In the book it states “His mum chucked a rock at him, cause he token some food.” That is the worst thing in the world. If my mom ever threw a rock at me I would be out. Matt is unlucky to have a mother like that.
