Dr. A Miles

            Robotics Doctor

            Office Hours: 6-9

Dr. Anthony Miles is a Robotic Surgeon. Only his job is to take live volunteers and transform them into living robots.

“Mary how many do we have today” Doctor Miles casually asked, placing his keys in his pants pocket. “We have 43 volunteers today Sir” Mary replied keeping her eyes focused on the un-done paper work. “Better than yesterday” he muttered picking up his lab coat that hung lifelessly on the chair. He slipped his thin arms through which only meant it was time to start the day. He nodded in Mary’s directions and slipped through the lab door. Terra Longberg’s bright green eyes shot up at his presence. He smiled. He was used to the worried look and knew what was to come next. “I’m sure Mary explained the process to you” he asked already knowing the answer. She nodded. “Then you have made your decision to do this correct?” he assured. He didn’t want anyone to run away at the last minute in the middle of the surgery. “Yes” she managed to say. The color of her apple cheeks drained. The doctor picked up his utensil and a thin piece of iron and strode over to Terra. “Well let us begin”.

“Lizabeth Lopez. It is time for to go to the facilities called “school”” Lizzy recognized the cold, mechanical voice and immediately opened her eyes. She didn’t want Bessie to rant on about how lazy she was and then call her mother up. She swung her legs over the side of her bed. “Bessie” she said looking up at the mechanical face. “Yes Miss Lizabeth?” the robot replied obediently. “Please tell me the schedule for today and may I make a request for some orange juice?” she asked walking over to her closet. “Of course Miss” Bessie replied rolling around franticly on her steel wheels. “The schedule for today would be: Breakfast, school, homework, and a movie with Lily Miss” Bessie said. Lizzy nodded her head. “Bessie I asked for an orange juice may you please get it?” she asked politely putting on a pair of bermudas and a tank top. “Of course Miss” Bessie’s wheels screeched against the floor as she rolled out the room. Lizzy gave a sigh of relief.

The room had suddenly become hot and congested. The doctor wiped his falling sweat with the back of his hand and turned his attention back to Terra’s face. The lamp above seemed to shine brighter than before and the room much smaller. It was complicated trying to drill the punctures into Terra’s skull and her memory was difficult to erase. He sighed and picked up the remaining piece of iron. Placing it gently to the left of Terra’s eye, he turned on the small hand drill. Terra winced with pain. He immediately shut the drill off and stepped back to look at his work. Terra’s new iron skin glowed as she stood up. “My work is complete” the doctor stated rubbing the excess blood off of his drill. Terra showed no emotion. “You may go out the right door” he said not raising his eyes. “Thank you Sir” Terra replied in a cold mechanical voice. The doctor smiled with satisfaction.

“Did you hear me Hon?” Ms. Miles asked once again. Mr. Miles shot up from his day dream. “Of course I heard you dear” he re assured locking eyes with his wife. Ms. Miles was not satisfied. “You were not thinking about that surgery again were you?” she asked in a stern voice. Mr. Miles looked sheepishly at his untouched plate. “I told you time and time again Hon” Ms. Miles began to lecture “You do this all the time! People offer their lives to become robots and you can’t stop them.” “But her eyes, she didn’t volunteer I knew she didn’t” he murmured. “Well it’s too late now” Ms. Miles whispered gathering up the dirty plates. Mr. Miles took a deep sigh and stood up.

Friendship Essay

In both relationships, there is a great deal of respect. They enjoy each others company and are willing to do work with one another, for  example in My Antonia , Jim and Antonia work in the vegetable and in “Once Around Manhattan”  the two were both determined to go around all of Manhattan. That is one of the many examples of the strong yet similar bond these four friends have, even though they’re both from different stories.

Two different families, two different worlds. Antonia and Jim are from completely different families and yet they still get along. Antonia's father has recently died and Antonia is sent to the neighboring farm to work. She is loved by not only Jim, but all the people around her. Her cheerfulness lights up the area around her. She admires her work and never complains about it. Jim and Antonia are almost like brother and sister because the show so much care and sympathy. They work together and they even watch thunderstorms together (as strange as that seems). A brother sister relationship.

Soo-Hyung and Gina had a strong relationship. I mean who would go in a boat, steer it around an island and make it back before the tide changes cmon that's some serious friendship right there. Who goes in a boat with a complete stranger?. Both have similar athletic intrest and both of their families immigrated to the same place.

Both friendships are strong. Each are from different backgrounds and different stories . Though that does not get in the way of their friendship, for both stories.

Friends Essay

The friendship between Antonia and Jim is very strong, as is Gina’s and Soo-Hyungs.

My Antonia

The reason Antonia and Jim’s friendship is so strong is because they are next door neighbors and they hang out all the time. Antonia’s parents died, and Antonia thinks she needs to leave the village because she doesn’t think that she is accepted anymore. Antonia is thinking about leaving the village. Jim really doesn’t want her to leave.

Once Around

Manhattan

Gina and Soo-Hyung are good friends because they traveled and helped each other around

Manhattan

in a canoe. When they got to a narrow river they supported each other to get past it.

The two friendships are similar because they both support each other in every way, and they never get into fights (so it seems). But most of all they always stick together.

"My Antonia" and "Once around Manhattan" Essay

Jim and Antonia are friends. So are Gina and Soo-Hyung. No matter the place, time, or era, a friend is a friend.

In “My Antonia”, Jim doesn’t want Antonia to leave. She thinks she must leave because she wasn’t accepted there, because of her race. Jim still wants her to stay. Also, Antonia thinks she won’t be able to do the household jobs. Again, Jim doesn’t care. That’s a strong friendship, but sometimes you need to let your friends do what’s right for them, not just what you want.

In “Once around Manhattan”, Gina and Soo-Hyung are friends. They are the only girls in a group of all guys called “The Challenge Club”. They don’t give up when they think they’re lost, far away from where the rest of the group are. They finally make it. At the end, Soo-Hyung says while talking about the Statue of Liberty, “I know. I’m going to have to call her Gina because she was my only hope back there.” At first, she was being sarcastic, but then she really meant it and Gina made an equally kind in friendship response. That is a good friendship.

These friendships are similar. Antonia and Jim, and Gina and Soo-Hyung: they probably are the best of friends. They can depend on each other for “light” on a “dark” day.

Dorm Life (McKenzie diaries)

“My mom says chocolate gives you acne” Alison said biting into her humungo Hershey chocolate bar. “Aw so what we’ll live” I replied with a little laugh reaching over Kaitlyn’s leg for some brownies. Alison reached over for the goose feathered pillow and aimed for my head. “Woa chillax no need to whip out the pillows” I said look for something to act as a shield. “Kenzi you know I need to stay beeee-you-tiful because of my new boyfriend” Oh gag me she’s talking about Luke ah-gain. “So stop eating that chocolate cause you’re getting uglier by the second” I joked getting ready to use the pillow behind me as a life saving shield. Kaitlyn’s mouth hung open like a big “O” and Rosie stared at me as if I had 5 heads. Alison’s face went to I’m-so-lovey-dovey-cause-I’m-talking-bout-my-boyfriend to I’m-gonna-blow-your-head-off-with-my-fire-breathing-dragoness. I gave of a mischievous smile and swung the pillow at Alison’s head. Though Alison was way to fast for my kamikaze move and I ended up whacking Rosie in the face. “Pillow fight!” Rosie announced taking a Tweety Bird pillow from Alison’s bed. I threw the plain white pillow on my bed and exchanged for a Sailor Moon one. “Bring it on you amateurs!” I screamed jumping on Kaitlyn’s Snoopy comforter. Suddenly, three pillows, one by one were after my head. “AHHHH I give up I surrender” I called out pretending to wave the little white flag. We all fell down on the floor, laughing and choking on leftover brownie.

Tangarine: Ari Reiner

Tangerine is a book about a boy named Paul Fisher. He moved from Huntsville to Huston, all the way to Tangerine County, Florida. He is visually impaired, or in the case of his school, handicapped or blind. He cannot play soccer on the team at his school because the insurance company won’t cover handicapped players. When a sinkhole swallows the school’s portable buildings, he gets temporarily transported to Tangerine Middle School in the same county as his own school as we would transfer from Albert Leonard if we had to, to Isaac Young. There, he meets his tough new friends and is making out well with the school’s soccer team. When his best friend from the other school, Joey, transfers to his school, he gets mad when Paul chooses his new friends over himself, and leaves. Unfortunately, the Erik Fisher Dream keeps getting in his way. He wants his parent to be there in the sidelines, cheering him on. But Paul knows where they prefer to be, cheering Erik on in the football games. Paul doesn’t mind though. He’s just doing what he loves best: soccer. And so far, they haven’t lost a game yet! Paul is a little bit afraid of his brother, Erik. Oh who am I kidding! He fears his brother! Erik told Paul that he looked at an eclipse and was blinded by it. But the reality is, Erik spray painted his brothers eyes! Erik is like a gangster and his brother is like a school freak. That is basically a literal comparison. This is part one of the book, and a little bit of part two. Keep on reading!
