Question 34

The friendship between Antonia and Jim from the novel”My Antonia” is very similar to the friendship of Gina and Soo-Hyung from the story "Once round Manhattan". In the next few paragraphs I will be explaining the friendships from both stories and how they are similar.

The friendship of Antonia and Jim from the novel “My Antonia" is very strong.  Even though Jim lives on the farm and Antonia works there they still they still try to keep there friendship. Since Antonia has so much to do in the kitchen, each morning Antonia and Jim go up to the garden to get vegetables for dinner that is the only time they get to see each other. They are "glad to have her in the house. She is so gay and responsive that one did not mind her heavy, running step, or her clattery way with pans". One night when Jim was lying in his bed he remembered him and Antonia climbing up on the roof to watch the clouds.

The friendship of Gina and Soo-Hyung from the story " Once around Manhattan". The two girls are very close friend who are part of the Challenge Club. They are the only two girls in the club. The two girl’s works together to get across. At the end when they final get to were they had to be, they told each other how much they helped them get across, first Gina ask Soo-Hyung "Does she have a name? The Statue of Liberty lady? Because if it weren't for her...” But Soo-Hyung said "I know. I'm going to call her Gina, because she was my only hope back there." but Gina says "her name is Soo-Hyung, steering us to solid ground."

The friendships are similar be cause they both had each other to help them. Also they had each other company. Gina and Soo-Hyung help each other get across the river with each other, also they had each others company. Jim could help Antonia with work or just keep her company.

In conclusion the with the two friendships they are both very close. Also they are both very similar.

Manhattan

. Even though they didn’t come in first place, they worked together and enjoyed themselves along the way. In the story Once Around Manahtten Soo-Hung and Gina both stated that they could not have completed the task without each other.

In Conclusion, Soo-Hyung & Gina's friendship is similar to Jim& Antonia's friendship because they both enjoy each others company. Gina and oo-Hyung were glad that they were able to work together and Antonia stated that she didnt want her summer with Jim to end.

Responds to question 7

Popular people can get away with more than less popular people. I disagree with this statement. Anyone that is popular thinks they are in control but there really not. You are in control of yourself. You can do whatever you want and get away with it no matter what your status is. As long as you have friends to be there for you. I believe as long as you have friends you're popular no matter what anybody says. An example of a popular kid and an unpopular kid being able to get away with the same thing is they can both get away with getting good or bad grade none of them can get treated differently in the classroom they have to be treated equally no matter what.

My answer to question 7 in the anticipation guide is I think that popular people can get away with more than not popular people because being popular is like being famous. Like movie stars, popular kids can get away with stuff like turning their homework in late. Jocks can get away with more stuff because they are always busy and always have games. If a jock was to hand their homework in late and give an excuse, the teacher would accept it. On the other hand if a not popular kid hands their homework in the teacher will get mad and not accept.

Gathering Blue #4

Children are often abused or neglected in Kira's world. This happens as a result of a child's wrong doing, or unfortunately sometimes because the child doesn't meet up to certain expectations. Although in my eyes this is very cruel, in the eyes of the people in Kira’s community, Kira lives in some think otherwise.

During the course of the book, Vandara wants Kira's land. Unfortunately Vandara's purpose in using the land is not necessarily proper. Vandara's idea is to build a pen, not only to keep animals from running around, but to also hold tykes. The purpose in doing this was to keep the tykes out of trouble. However, I would still consider this abuse because it’s not correct to keep children and chickens in the same pen. This also shows neglection towards Kira because Vandara wants to take away Kira's land, even though that’s almost all Kira has left.

On page 138, the author writes "...this small tyke was locked in a room alone." This is an example of neglection because to leave a young child alone, locked in a room is defiantly unkind and unthoughtful towards the child.

In the novel on page 53, a very unkind mother treats her young tyke with abuse.  After the mother came outside from a shop, she noticed her tyke playing with the dogs and stuffing the dog scraps into his mouth. As a result of her anger toward her child at the moment, she yanked him away, pulling at his arm and throwing a rough slap across his head.

Not only is Kira and young tykes neglected and abused, but Matt as well. There is a very poisonous plant called an oleander. When Matt was very young he accidentally touched the plant and apparently his mother slapped him so had he felt as if his head were to fall off. Matt's brother also told Kira about a time when Matt's mother thrashed him badly. His body was bleeding horribly. This goes to prove that the adults in Kira's community did what they thought was correct in order to teach their children lessons.

Even though Matt has been through some very tough times, the neglection and abuse that has been given to him has made him a much stronger person. He is very brave and has proven to Kira that he will do what it takes to make their friendship work. Matt realized how strong of a person Kira truly is inside. They both worked together to accomplish the difficult tasks that had been laid out throughout the novel. Matt is so loyal to Kira that he even risks his own life, trying to find the color blue for her. Although Negelction and abuse is a terrible, the idea of breaking someone down can often makes them stronger. Matt and Kira both went through abuse and neglection and in the end of it, they became brave, loyal, and strong.

Gathering Blue #3:final

The children in Kira's worlds would are abused and neglected especially Matt was abused and neglected. In the next few paragraphs I will show example from the text to show how people were abused and neglected.

The children in Kira world are abused and neglected. “We’re going to use the saplings to build a pen for the tykes” (pages 15 and 16). I think this shows examples of abuse and neglect they are leaving the tykes in a pen all day while they work and a pen is what you put animals in so it’s like they are treating them like animals. Some examples of abuse are “they be stuffing new thing into me” (page 154) this is abuse because they are forcing them to sing and to learn. “Why was this small tyke locked in a room alone” (page 138) this show examples of neglect because the tykes were locked in a room by themselves. Vadara is always abusing Kira on page 16 is an example of one time she abused Kira by saying “we don’t want you here… you don’t belong in the village… your worthless with that leg”. On page 11 it Kira thinks “in order to pen their disobedient toddlers and chickens, the women would turn her out of the village to be devoured by the beasts that waited in the woods to forage the field”. This means that they are going to kick Kira into the wood so she can be eaten by the beast so they can have her land to make a pen to put their children n while they work.

Matt is a person who is mostly abused and neglected. Some examples of abuse are on page 164 it states “she thrashed Matt so hard he was horrid bloody” meaning somebody hit him so hard he was gushing blood. Another example of that is “I be whipped iffen I don’t finish the fire twiggles” (page 10) meaning if he didn’t finish getting things for the fire he be hit. An example of neglect is on page 57 it says “… realizing that Matt, grimy and unkempt, felt no need of soap. She supposed Matt had a mother somewhere, and usually mothers scrubbed their tykes now and then, but she never known Matt clean”. This means that mother normal wash their tykes but Matt has never been clean so she doesn’t know if he has a mom who just doesn’t clean him or if he just doesn’t have a mom at all.

The fact that Matt was abused makes him independent. When he finally decides to leave a find a better life for him. Also he is very helpful to Kira he defended her in the trail in the beginning of the book.

It is very sad that kids in the book are abused and neglected. But for people like Matt it made him stronger.
