The book, Nothing But The Truth, is about a ninth grader in high school who, with great animosity, dislikes Ms.Narwin. The girl who Philip seems to entice, Allison, says that Ms.Narwin is a really good teacher. Basically, what happens is that Ms.Narwin, Philip's English teacher, sends him out of the room for being disrespectful during the Star Spangled Banner. This eventually happens twice and, Philip is suspended for two infractions. But, of course, the story leaks out as something completely different.
In the story, the reporter, Jenifer Stewart interviews Ted Griffen, a man running for school board, only to find out about his recent conversation with Mr.Malloy. She finds out that Philip has been suspended for singing the Star Spangled Banner. What the reporter doesn't know is, there is a rule that states to be quiet during the Star Spangled Banner. Also, two times he disrespected his teacher, Ms.Narwin, by talking back. To facilitate this situation, instead of finding out the whole story, she only publishes Philip's story.
I only had one or two problems with this book. First, the ending (ha ha first, the ending .) The ending is, when Philip is asked to sing The Star Spangled Banner, at his new school, he begins to cry. First of all, what happens in his new school? Does he make new friends, does he get a girlfriend, how about his English teacher now, does he hate her? I guess the author is leaving that open for the next book... Also, what’s with the whole “crying because he doesn't know a song? I mean, I know it's funny but, I don't really get it.
Another thing that I didn't get was, why was he so mad at Ms.Narwin. I mean, was it some kind of Strategy to get back at her for what she did, teach a boring book? I don't see that being her fault. If anything that would be the schools. You'd also wonder why Allison didn’t try to convince Philip to like Ms.Narwin, I mean they are going out right? Anyway, once you get over those two problems, this is actually a really good book.
