Vandara is an antagonist in the story Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry. Throughout the village "people whispered about her. She was known, and respected. Or feared."(pg 15) She is surely a leader of the village, but the question remains whether she is respected as much as she is feared.
There are many examples of Vandara's interactions with the women of the village illustrating that the women respect or fear her. Kira, an orphan with a twisted leg lives in the village where Vandara is seen as the leader, and the weak people in this village are cast aside. "Kira saw that she was surrounded by hostile women who had come from their cotts and were watching Vandara for instructions and leadership."(pg 17) Kira was about to be stoned to death and was trying to calm the women down so that she could live. "Finally a woman in the group completed words of the rule "the causer-of-death must die."(pg 17). The woman who shouted "the causer-of-death must die" meant that if they stoned Kira and she died then all of the women would have to die too. This was a rule from the Council of Edifice and Vandara and her people abided by this rule.
The women in the village didn't always agree with Vandara's choices. An example of how we known this is when Kira stood up to Vandara because she demanded the other women to build a pen on Kiras mothers land. "Other women emerged from surrounding cotts "we need it," one called. Were going to use the saplings to build a pen for the tykes, it was Vandara's idea." Kira looked at the woman, who was holding the arm of a toddler roughly. "It might be a good idea, Kira replied " If you want to pen your little ones. Not on this piece of land. You can build a pen somewhere else."(pg 15,16) In this passage Kira stood up for what she believed was right and she didn't fear Vandara and what would happen to her.
Vandara is a leader. The kind of leader she is can be seen in her actions and her realtionship to others. Vandara was a feared woman in the village and everyone respected her. Because of her battle with one of the forest creatures she had a ragged scar that started from her chin and continued all the way down her neck to her shoulder. Vandara knew how to defend herself after she defeated the beast. The women in the village all feared Vandara because they knew that if she could defeat one of the beast's then she could hurt anyone. The people of the village all respected Vandara because she was the only survivor of the beast's and everyone felt respected and that they could idolize the fact that shes strong.
