Jim & Antonio were friends. They always got along. They picked the corn and vegetables together. They lived together played together and played together. This is like Gina and Soo-Hyung because they always spend time together like when they go kayaking around Manhattan Island in there club witch is all boys and they are the only girls. They spend time with each other and tell each other about there problems and there history. Like when Gena  got out of the kiak to go look at her grandmas old apartment

Essay Final

"My Antonia" and "Once Around Manhattan" are stories which describe friendship between two people.

The novel "My Antonia" describes the friendship between Jim Burden and Antonia Shimerda. Antonia's family came from Bohemia and they live next door to the Burden's. Antonia goes to work on the Burden's farm when her father dies. Antonia helps Jim's grandmother in the kitchen. Jim has his own job, carrying water for the men who work in the wheat field. Even though they both are busy doing their own chores, they find time to be with each other. Jim helps Antonia pick vegetables for dinner from the garden. When rain falls during the hot weather, they both go outside and play together in the rain. During these brief outings, they have conversations which describe the kind of relationship which they have with each other.

In "Once Around Manhattan" the author is describing the friendship between Gina and Soo-Hyung. Gina and Soo-Hyung were the only girls in the Challenge Club who were going to paddle around Manhattan Island in canoes. Even though it was a very difficult task to achieve, they both worked together and succeeded. In the event, they managed to have some fun too.

Even though the stories are very different from each other, I think the friendships are similar. In both stories, the friends are from different ethnic backgrounds. Antonia's family came from Bohemia, where as Jim's family is American. Gina's grandmother came from Italy, and Soo-Hyung's grandmother came from Korea. Each of the characters in the two novels, managed to have fun and friendship while accomplishing difficult tasks.

Final Essay

In both stories the people have great friendships. In  "My Antonia" the friendship is between Jim and Antonia. Jim knew much about Antonia. He  must have known much about her to be able to remember their summer and what Antonia enjoyed. In "Once Around Manhattan" Gina and Soo-Hyung enjoyed a whole ride around Manhattan together.

"My Antonia" tells about Jim and Antonia's time they spend together during the harvest time.  You can tell that they both had fun at Jim's grandmothers. Jim remembers how they climbled up on the roof of the chicken-house. He remembers all the details like how there was metallic thunder and it was loud. The lightening had great zigzags making it stand out and come close to them. In the story Jim said there was a black cloud no bigger than a little boat.  I think this had  to be a great friendship because they spend all that time together. I would describe the friendship as very strong.

"Once Around Manhattan" tells about a boat trip friends Gina and Soo-Hyung go on with a Challenge Club. They saw The Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan buildings and crossed Ellis Island. They enjoyed everything they saw. They even had a problem when it was hard to row the boat but they worked together and never gave up. This proves that they have a good friendship that they did equal work.

These friendships are similar because they both knew each other well. In both stories they were each doing something with the other person. They both had fun and there were no problems getting along. They were also both looking at something with each other.

In conclusion, these are both similar friendships. They each spend time together. They fun and like each other’s company.

My Antonio and Once Around Manhattan

Essay

Friendships are strong. In the stories “My Antonia” and “Once around

Manhattan

” both have strong friendships. In the story “My Antonia” Jim and Antonia have strong friendships. I will give you examples from the story “My Antonia” how Antonia and Jim have a strong friendship. The first example from the story is a quote. Antonia said this “If I live here, like you, that is different. Things will be easy for you. But they will be hard for us.” What this sentence means is that if Antonia lived there things will be different everything. Antonia would help Jim with the chores and everything he needs help with. What the end of the sentence means that their friendship will be harder because they will be really hard problem that could destroy your friendship. Another example of the friendship between Antonia and Jim is that Antonia said “I alike your grandmother, and all things here.” What that sentence means that Antonia likes everything in Jim’s house and that is what a true friend is. That is how strong Antonia’s and Jim’s friendship is.

Another type of a strong friendship is the one with Gina and Soo-Hyoung. Their friendship is strong because they found some momentums while they were paddling around

Manhattan

. One momentum is the bridge. It was a momentum to Gina, but not to Soo-Hyoung. It was a momentum to Gina because her grandmother used to live. Even though Soo-Hyoung didn’t want to stop because she wanted to finish, but she didn’t say anything. Only a true friend would put their arguments aside to help a friend remember the good times he or she had. Another momentum they saw on their way was the statue of liberty. That was a momentum because Soo-Hyoung didn’t know what it stands for, so Gina told Soo-Hyoung was the statue of liberty means. Only a true friend would help a friend if he or she didn’t know something. That is how they are true friends.

Their friendships are the similar in a lot of ways. One way their friendships are similar because they don’t argue about each other. Another way that their friendships are similar is that Antonia and Jim care about each other, and Gina and Soo-Hyoung care about each other the same way. Another similarity is that Gina helped Soo-Hyoung to know what the statue of liberty means, and Antonia said if she lived with Jim she would help him with everything. That is how their friendships are similar.

Question 6

"Economic differences between friends cause problems; people from different economic backgrounds cannot be friends." I completely disagree with this sentence for many reasons. The main reason is that friendship isn't based on money, it is based on the qualities of that person. If a person is poor, but they are a good person you would want to be friends with them. Also, if you like a person just because they are rich, you are not really their friend. I have friends that are rich, poor, and middle-class. I get along with each of them the same. Sometimes adults are very judgmental so when they see a poor kid they won't let their child be friends with him. That is the only way that economic differences can cause problems. In conclusion, that is why I disagree with that statement.

Anticipation Guide question

Economic differences between friends cause problems; people from different economic backgrounds cannot be friends.

             Do you agree or disagree?

I disagree. I think that people from different economic backgrounds can be friends. People who go to work and school together come from all over. These people all have different beliefs because of their cultures but most children and adults still get along. I also think  that meeting different people gives you a change to learn something new. My religion a Jehovah's Witness is different from most Christians, but just because I do not celebrate holidays and birthdays does not make me that much different. I still talk to people and my friends do not share all the same beliefs. At school or just in general you may see someone arguing or not getting along but often times it has nothing to do with their economic differences and backgrounds. If economic differences between friends cause problems then that friendship is not got going to last very long.  Also, most of the people around you are not going to get along.

In conclusion, I think you can get along and be friends with people who are different than you.

Q.6 Economic Differances

I agree that people can be friends through economic differences. I believe that as long as you and someone else have something in common you can be friends. I have plenty of friends that are richer than I am and we are still friends; I also have some of friends that have less money than me and they are still friends with me and I am still friends with them. Take for instance me and my friend Frank we are both really good friend almost like brothers. One time he slept over at my house for two whole weeks. Well any way the point isn’t that he slept over the point is that I am richer than he is and we still get along great. We have been friend’s science I can remember. Another example is me and my friend Connor he is richer than me and I have been friends with him the same amount of time as Frank.

Question 6

Question: Economic differences between friends cause problems; people from different backgrounds cannot be friends.

Answer:

It is actually good if you make friends with another person with a different background as you. It is good because you could learn what kind of religion he or she has. You could learn what kind of things he or she has in their background that maybe you never knew! There is definetly way more reasons that if you make friends with another kid with another different background. Here is just a few reasons why it is good.

This is my reason.

I highly disagree. I disagree because if you were born in the us that doesn’t mean that you can’t be friends with another different type of person from another different culture. There is nothing wrong if you make friends with another person that has a different religion or a different background.

Vandara from Gathering Blue

In the book Gathering Blue Vandara is either well known, respected, or feared. In the book you can tell that Vandara is either respected or feared because it says (pg. 17) "Finally a women in the group completed words of the rule. "The causer-of-death must die." This women could have joined in with her because they were agreeing with her thinking she was right or they could have been scared that if they do not speak up Vandara's not going to be to pleased. Another reason to say this is because Vandara said, "By night-start tomorrow, when she feels the claws at her throat," she went on, " this two- syllable mistake of a girl will wish she had died of sickness beside her mother." Then the other women nodded in agreement. This shows that the women follow Vandara and they could do this because they fear her or agree with her.

Sometimes in Gathering Blue Vandara's choices are not agreeded with. We know this because  in the book at the Council of Guardians the chief guardian said to Vandara," You demanded the girl's land, and you may have it, you and the other women..." Then Vandara had turned to Kira really mad. So, we see that she did not get all that she wanted because Kira did not have to leave the area she just had to continue her mother's work. (pg.49)

Vandara is also a leader because it says(pg.16), " Kira saw that she was surrounded by hostile women who had come from their cotts and were watching Vandara for instructions and leadership."  Vandara obviously knows what shes doing around the village so when the women do not know something they know who to go to for instruction. Vandara is always also with the women and they follow her weather or not they want to so she is some kind of leader.
